Five Ways to Participate in Heart Health Month

February is American Heart Health Month.  Although many of us first think of the heart as a symbol of love, in February, it is also important to consider the health implications of this important organ.   1. Monitor Your Blood Pressure

About 1 in 3 American adults have high blood pressure.  This common condition increases the risk for both heart disease and stroke.  Because high blood pressure often has no warning signs or symptoms, it is important to check it regularly. If you do have high blood pressure, you can take some of the following steps to reduce it.

 

  1. Eat a Healthy Diet

Choosing healthy snack and meal options can help you to avoid cardiovascular disease, as well as other potential health problems.  For example, lower sodium intake can help to lower your blood pressure.  Additionally, aim for at least five servings of fresh fruit and vegetables each day while limiting your foods that are high in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol.

 

  1. Maintain a Healthy Weight

The risk for cardiovascular disease is significantly increased in individuals who are overweight or obese.  If you are not sure if you are overweight, talk with a doctor.  He or she can provide feedback and then help you to develop a safe plan to lose the excess weight, if necessary.

 

  1. Exercise Regularly

Regular physical activity will not only help you to maintain a healthy weight, but it can also promote lowered cholesterol and blood pressure levels.  Even in the busiest schedule, you can find creative ways to work exercise into your schedule.  For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator when possible or find a friend to walk a lap with during your lunch break.

 

  1. Quit Smoking

If you smoke, you are at a significantly higher risk for heart disease. Although it may be a challenge, quitting as soon as possible is one of the greatest steps you can take toward increased heart health.  Talk with your doctor about ways to help you quit, or consider joining a smoking cessation program for encouragement and accountability.
