Ice cream that’s good for you? It’s a summertime miracle!
It’s a classic dilemma.
How do you indulge in the iconic summertime treat – ice cream – and still fit into your swimsuit this weekend? What if we told you that you can have your cake…er…ice cream, and eat it too? Now hold on, don’t go chasing after the ice cream truck just yet. There is one tiny catch – you have to make it yourself.
Don’t panic – these healthy ice cream recipes are as simple as they are delicious, and all can be easily modified. In fact, the hardest thing about making these homemade ice cream recipes is choosing which one to try first!
Dairy-free, but still rich and sweet. Adjust the amount of sugar depending on whether the milk and creamer you are using is sweetened or not.
- 2 cups soy milk
- 2 cups soy milk coffee creamer
- 3 instant coffee packs (6oz. each)
- ¼ to ¾ cup sugar (to taste)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
Pour one cup soy milk into a bowl, and whisk in coffee packets until dissolved. Add the rest of the ingredients and continue whisking until dissolved. Freeze in an ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions. Eat immediately or transfer to a container and freeze two hours. No ice cream maker? No problem. Simply freeze the mixture until nearly solid, then process in a blender for a “soft serve” treat.
This healthy frozen yogurt recipe only contains three simple ingredients, but as Aristotle said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
- 3 ripe peaches, peeled and cut into chunks (about 3 cups)
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 ½ cups plain Greek yogurt
Puree peaches in a blender, add honey and yogurt and blend well. Process in ice cream maker until the mixture stiffens and begins clumping on the blades. Transfer to a container and freeze for two hours.
There’s a secret ingredient in this healthy ice cream recipe…cottage cheese. Now we know that sounds a little crazy, but consider this – cottage cheese packs a walloping 25 grams of protein per cup. Even if you don’t like cottage cheese, we’re betting you’ll love cottage cheese “ice cream.”
- ½ cup cottage cheese
- ½ of a frozen banana
- ⅓ cup frozen blueberries
- 2-3 TBSP almond milk
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
Combine in a blender and process until smooth. Transfer to container and freeze 2-3 hours. Top with granola, coconut, melted peanut butter, or more blueberries!
Talk about easy! This is the ultimate low calorie ice cream recipe – so healthy that you can feel free to add all the fun mix-ins you want!

Blend the bananas in a food processor (or a strong blender.) They will look crumbly, then gooey, before turning into a lovely, creamy, soft-serve consistency. At that point, add mix-ins like chocolate chips, a drizzle of honey, a pinch of cinnamon, a scoop of peanut butter…the possibilities are endless! Blend a few more seconds, then transfer to a container and freeze to desired consistency.
Decadent chocolate and peanut butter may be the last thing that comes to mind when you think “healthy ice cream recipe” but this frozen treat only contains 108 calories per ½ cup serving.
- 2 frozen bananas, sliced
- 2 TBSP cocoa powder
- 2 TBSP creamy natural peanut butter
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- pinch salt
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and pulse, 15 seconds at a time until smooth, scraping the sides as you go. This may take a few minutes, but it’s worth the wait. Serve immediately or freeze in a container for up to five days.
