Of course, this doesn’t guarantee that your quitter will not bring it back into the house at some point, but it helps avoid triggering a craving.
In general, it’s important to spend time with the quitter to keep their mind off smoking. Going to the movies, take a walk, go on a bike ride, etc. can be effective ways to move past the moments of strong craving. Be patient, and also remind the person that they can talk to you anytime they need to. Ask the person if they would prefer for you to ask regularly how they are doing, or not. You can also buy them fun treats like a hard candy to suck on. This can be useful for quitters because the psychological aspect of smoking is very strong—so providing a substitute can ease the transition into non-smoking.
Remember, the best thing you can do for the quitter is be available with your love and support, and not to judge if they slip or even relapse. Almost all smokers will experience this during their process of quitting, so it’s important to remind the smoker of this. Oftentimes, a slip or relapse can provide a learning opportunity so that the quitter will not make the same choice the next time.
